Discover the top-selling hatchbacks of June 2025! While Maruti Suzuki leads with Swift and WagonR, a significant year-on-year sales decline across popular models, except for Tata Tiago and Altroz, signals a shift in the Indian auto market.
Hatchback Hustle: Maruti Suzuki Dominates Top 10, But Declining Sales Raise Eyebrows in June 2025

The Indian automotive landscape has long been defined by the ubiquitous hatchback, a segment that, in the past, formed the very backbone of passenger vehicle sales. However, June 2025's sales figures paint a revealing picture: while familiar names still grace the top spots, a closer look at year-on-year comparisons reveals a consistent and concerning trend of decline for some of the industry's biggest players.
Maruti Suzuki, the undisputed king of the compact car segment, once again saw its Swift claim the top position. Yet, its reign appears less robust than before. With 13,275 units sold in June, the popular hatchback experienced a notable 19% dip compared to its performance in June 2024. Hot on its heels was another Maruti Suzuki stalwart, the WagonR, which narrowly missed the top spot with 12,930 units, reflecting a more modest 6% decline year-on-year.
Rank | Top 10 Hatchbacks June 2025 (YoY) | June 2025 Sales | June 2024 Sales |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Maruti Suzuki Swift (-19%) | 13,275 | 16,422 |
2 | Maruti Suzuki WagonR (-6%) | 12,930 | 13,790 |
3 | Maruti Suzuki Baleno (-40%) | 8,966 | 14,895 |
4 | Tata Tiago (17%) | 6,032 | 5,174 |
5 | Maruti Suzuki Alto (-35%) | 5,045 | 7,775 |
6 | Hyundai Grand i10 Nios (-14%) | 4,237 | 4,948 |
7 | Tata Altroz (1%) | 3,974 | 3,937 |
8 | Hyundai i20 (-29%) | 3,785 | 5,315 |
9 | Toyota Glanza (-29%) | 2,938 | 4,118 |
10 | Maruti Suzuki Celerio (-32%) | 2,038 | 2,985 |
Further down the list, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno experienced a dramatic reversal of fortunes. Once a consistent contender for the top three, the premium hatchback plummeted to 8,966 units in June 2025, marking a staggering 40% drop from the previous year – the steepest decline recorded among the top ten.
Bucking the trend was Tata Motors' Tiago. In a refreshing contrast to its peers, this compact hatch enjoyed a healthy uptick in domestic volumes. The homegrown manufacturer reported 6,032 units sold in June, a commendable 17% increase over last year's 5,174 units. This strong performance propelled the Tiago ahead of the Maruti Suzuki Alto, which, unfortunately, slipped to fifth position with just 5,045 units and a significant 35% year-on-year decline.
Following closely, the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios secured the sixth spot, though it too felt the pinch, registering a 14% slip to 4,237 units. Tata's second entry, the Altroz, showcased remarkable resilience with 3,974 units, achieving a marginal 1% gain over its sales a year ago.
The Hyundai i20 found itself in eighth place, experiencing a substantial 29% decrease from June 2024 with 3,785 units sold. Mirroring this downturn was the Toyota Glanza, a premium hatchback that also saw its sales dip by a similar rate, closing the month with 2,938 units in the domestic market. Rounding out the top ten was the Maruti Suzuki Celerio, which concluded June with 2,038 units, representing a 32% year-on-year decline.
Even with five models dominating the top ten, Maruti Suzuki's overall performance in the hatchback segment signals a clear challenge. The company's historically dominant hatchback portfolio is now facing a dual threat: evolving buyer preferences, which increasingly lean towards feature-rich compact SUV alternatives, and intensifying competition across the board. The June 2025 sales figures are a testament to a segment in flux, prompting industry observers to ponder the future trajectory of India's beloved hatchbacks.
